Pokedoku is a brain-teasing game that offers a simple yet challenging objective: fill in all nine boxes with the correct Pokémon. However, there's a twist - you have only nine guesses to get it right. This intriguing fusion of Pokémon and Sudoku puts your knowledge, strategy, and puzzle-solving skills to the test, making it a must-try for fans of both genres.
Now, let's dive into the mechanics of this addictive game to understand how it works:
The Goal: The primary objective in Pokedoku is to fill all nine boxes with the correct Pokémon. This sounds simple, but as you'll discover, it's easier said than done.
Nine Guesses: Here's where the challenge lies - you must accomplish this feat with only nine guesses. Your choice of Pokémon in each box must be calculated and strategic.
Multiple Correct Answers: In some cases, there can be multiple correct answers for a given box. For instance, if the box corresponds to both Fire and Fighting types, you can input Pokémon like Blaziken or Infernape.
No Do-Overs: Once you've used a Pokémon in a box, you can't use it again or change your answer. So, it's imperative to make wise decisions. If a Pokémon can fit into multiple boxes, your choice is locked in once submitted.
Special Column: While the first two columns and three rows adhere to typical Pokémon types, the third column is unique. It features special categories, including different regions, legendary Pokémon, and more.
Legendary Pokémon: The special column includes Legendary, Mythical, and Ultra Beast Pokémon, adding an extra layer of challenge for die-hard fans.
Mega Evolutions: Mega Evolution Pokémon are categorized based on the region where the original form of the Pokémon originated, offering a new twist to the game.
Regional Pokémon: When a specific region is a category, you must select a Pokémon that originated from that region. For instance, Pidgey only counts for Kanto, despite being found in various regions throughout the games.
Daily Challenges: If you don't manage to solve all nine correctly, don't worry! New puzzles are generated every day at midnight EST, providing a fresh challenge to keep you engaged.
Feedback: The Pokedoku team values player feedback and welcomes any suggestions or bug reports, showing their commitment to improving the game and enhancing the player experience.
An Interview with the Creators
To gain insight into the minds behind Pokedoku, we had the privilege of sitting down with Joe and Ryan, the creators of this captivating fusion of Pokémon and Sudoku.
Q: What inspired you to create Pokedoku?
Joe: Our inspiration for creating Pokedoku stemmed from a personal passion for Pokémon and the absence of a Pokémon-themed Sudoku-style game. I initially stumbled upon Immaculate Grid, which uses baseball players as answers in a similar grid-style game. While jokingly mentioning the idea of a hockey version of the game to Ryan, it eventually sparked the concept of Pokedoku.
Q: How many people are working on the website?
Joe: Currently, we're a team of two. I handle the marketing aspects of the website, including managing social media accounts, while Ryan, our software engineer, is responsible for developing the entire website. It's a dynamic partnership that keeps Pokedoku running smoothly.
Q: Any future features or improvements you’d like to share?
Joe: We have exciting plans for Pokedoku's future. Some features we intend to implement include a user system for better solution tracking and streaks, solution leaderboards, puzzle histories, and even more enriched puzzle categories. While we don't want to reveal too much, rest assured that players can look forward to exciting updates in the near future.
Q: When did you first start playing or getting interested in Pokémon?
Joe: Pokémon has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I've played nearly every Pokémon game, although I haven't delved much into the competitive scene. For me, Pokémon has always been a way to relax and enjoy the thrill of capturing and collecting them all.
Q: What’s your favorite Pokémon and game in the series?
Joe: Selecting a favorite Pokémon can be challenging, but Charmander holds a special place in my heart, partly due to a cherished childhood stuffed Charmander. I also have a soft spot for Politoed. As for games, I have fond memories of the Diamond & Pearl series, with Piplup as my all-time favorite Pokémon. I even went to the Pokémon Center in NYC to get Diamond on release day!
Pokedoku is more than just a game; it's a testament to the creativity and passion of its creators. It seamlessly combines the world of Pokémon with the mental challenges of Sudoku, offering players a unique and addictive experience. As Joe and Ryan continue to refine and expand Pokedoku, it's clear that this game is here to stay, providing a delightful and engaging way for Pokémon enthusiasts and puzzle lovers to test their wits and knowledge.
